How to Grow Your Social Media Following

Growing your social media can be a difficult task, but it is possible! There are many ways to do this, but here are just a few tips on getting started.

1. Start with one or two social media platforms. When you first start, juggling more than two can be difficult. I would encourage you to think about who you would like to attract to your page/profile.

2. Think about what you want your post to get across. If you have a blog, you can post snippets of your blog; if you’re selling products, make sure you take good pictures or create good mock-ups.

3. Remember to keep your followers engaged; you should switch it up now and then. There are many types of posts to help you fill your calendar.

  • Product post (showcase your products)

  • Engagement post (ask your followers their input on interesting subjects)

  • Promotion post (promote a product or blog, similar to a product post)

  • Competition post (create a competition with a personalized hashtag)

  • Behind the scenes post (show your workplace or maybe just a cup of Joe)

  • Holiday Post

  • Quotes/Memes

  • News or Trending Post

  • Create a poll

4. Create your own social media calendar. You can create it on excel or numbers (on apple). There are several accessible sources you can use outside of those, though. There is Hootsuite, a site that offers a free posting calendar for up to two social media profiles. Facebook provides a posting calendar as well that you can use with Instagram. 

5. Stay at least two weeks ahead. Create enough posts for at least two weeks, and don’t fall behind! This will help you be less stressed and have enough time to work on your actual work. 

6. It’s a learning curve. Take your time, don’t rush it. It will take a while for your following to grow. Unless you go viral, it will take months, maybe years, to collect your followers. As you grow, you will realize when it’s the best time for you to post (when you get the most interaction), what type of posts work best for you and your brand, your voice, and how to work your calendar for your advantage.
